Percent: Definition and Example

Math Glossary: Numbers – Mathbot, the Math Made Easy robot coach

Definition: A percent is a ratio that compares a number to 100, written with the symbol %, so 37% means 37 out of every 100.

Grade 6

What does percent mean?

The word percent means per hundred. A score of 37% means 37 for every 100. As a fraction it is 37/100, and as a decimal it is 0.37.

How do you find a percent of a number?

Change the percent to a decimal or fraction, then multiply. To find 35% of 80, multiply 0.35 by 80. The product is 28. You can also think in tens: 10% of 80 is 8, so 30% is 24, and 5% is 4, giving 24 plus 4, which equals 28.

How do you find the whole or the percent?

Use a part, whole, and percent relationship:

  • Part = percent times whole.
  • Whole = part divided by percent.
  • Percent = part divided by whole.

If 18 is 45% of a number, the number is 18 divided by 0.45, which is 40.

What mistake is common?

Percents above 100 are allowed. If a plant grows to 150% of its original height of 12 inches, it is now 18 inches tall, not shorter.

Example: Mathbot has finished 21 of 60 levels, so he has completed 35 percent.
